Back button AF and the Nikon D3S

Back button autofocus (AF) is a popular technique among many photographers, and it can be particularly beneficial when using the Nikon D3S. Here are some reasons why you might want to consider using back button AF:

  1. Improved Focus Control: By separating the focus function from the shutter release, you gain more control over when and where the camera focuses. This can be especially useful in situations where you need to lock focus and recompose your shot.

  2. Faster Shooting: With back-button AF, you can keep the camera in continuous autofocus mode (AF-C) without worrying about the camera refocusing every time you press the shutter button. This is great for tracking moving subjects.

  3. Consistency: Once you get used to using back button AF, it can become a more consistent and reliable way to focus, reducing the chances of missed shots due to focus errors.

To enable back button AF on the Nikon D3S, you can follow these steps:

  1. Press the Menu button and navigate to the Custom Setting Menu (pencil icon).

  2. Select Autofocus > AF activation.

  3. Choose the option for AF-ON only.

Many professional photographers, including those who shoot sports, wildlife, and weddings, find back button AF to be a game-changer. It might take a bit of practice to get used to, but it can significantly improve your shooting experience.
